Stop 1 · 30–60 minutes
Temple Square
Begin with the currently open visitor areas, gardens, Tabernacle, Assembly Hall, and renovation viewpoints. The Salt Lake Temple interior remains closed during the renovation.
A mapped walk through the historic core, Main Street, South Temple, and Capitol Hill
Follow six numbered stops from Temple Square through the downtown grid and up to the Capitol. Allow two to three hours outdoors or most of a day with interiors, museums, meals, and a performance.
Salt Lake City's numbered grid makes the center easy to read, and the free-fare transit zone can shorten several downtown hops. The full mapped route is roughly a half day with the Capitol climb. Temple Square construction paths, building access, worship schedules, and event closures can change the best block-level order.
Stop 1 · 30–60 minutes
Begin with the currently open visitor areas, gardens, Tabernacle, Assembly Hall, and renovation viewpoints. The Salt Lake Temple interior remains closed during the renovation.
Stop 2 · 15–30 minutes
Cross into the indoor-outdoor blocks south of Temple Square for an easy view of how the historic center meets the modern downtown grid.
Stop 3 · 20–35 minutes
Follow Main Street past Utah Transit Authority (UTA) TRAX light rail, older commercial facades, restaurants, and Eccles Theater. Check the evening calendar before building the rest of the day around a performance.
Stop 4 · 15–30 minutes
Walk east on South Temple to the cathedral exterior and its contrasting architecture. Interior access depends on worship, events, and current public hours.
Stop 5 · 35–60 minutes
Climb State Street for the grounds, building, and a broad look across the valley. The grade is the route's hardest stretch; use transit or a short ride when needed.
Stop 6 · 15–25 minutes
Descend toward the Conference Center and finish beside Temple Square. Check the current tour and visitor information before deciding whether to include the interior or rooftop gardens.

Temple Square + downtown walking map
The route links Temple Square, City Creek Center, Main Street, the Cathedral of the Madeleine, the Utah State Capitol, and the Conference Center. Follow current pedestrian directions around construction, worship, events, accessibility needs, and street closures.

Uphill extension
The Utah State Capitol crowns the hill north of Temple Square. Its grounds and interior add architecture, state history, and a clear look back across the downtown grid. Walk only if the grade and weather fit; otherwise take a short ride and descend on foot.
Check current public hours, tours, and security guidance.
Use the grounds for city, valley, and Wasatch views.
Capitol blossoms vary with each year's weather.
Descend toward the Conference Center or Memory Grove.

Check the current performance calendar, reserve a seat when needed, and leave enough time for dinner before the performance.
Jazz games and arena events change traffic, parking, and restaurant demand across the west side of downtown.
Use Central Ninth, Granary, or another neighborhood meal when the downtown core feels too office-and-event oriented after dark.
